I have talked a lot about seafood with people recently. Mostly about who likes shellfish and fish and who's allergic to what and what that might mean. So I had it on the brain. Also, I miss Norway and fishing there.
As I was reading through one of our new blog links (see the lefthand panel here at leisurely breakfast for that) I noticed something interesting. The blog is Locavore Nation from the public radio show, The Splendid Table. A whole bunch of people in different places in the U.S. are blogging about their attempts to eat primarily locally. It's pretty good! How can you not love things from NPR/PRI/American Public Media?
As I was reading through the most recent posts, I noticed that two different bloggers referred to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program. It seems to be a way to pick what seafood you are going to eat based on its sustainability, toxicity, and locality. Seems neat to me. So if you eat seafood and live on the east coast, check it out! There are also options for people who live other places there... but why would you live anywhere but here? (just kidding!)

easy, breezy, beautiful snow peas!
I really like the Minimalist, a New York Times column on making good, simple food. sometimes the dishes are not what I would personally cook for myself, but I appreciate the sentiment behind them. this week's featured dish is Chinese snow peas. it's crazy easy, but looks so tasty. I've linked to the recipe, not the column, so be sure to check out the article that accompanies the 2 steps that make up the instructions.
another great Minimalist column: how to cook with your microwave. it includes a recipe for a steamed chocolate pudding that is, according to the experts, quite good.

leisurely breakfast: the perm edition
sometimes, you just need to look a little different. you want something newer, nicer, more hip. something the kids at school will love/hate-because-they're-jealous. like getting a perm in the 1980s. it instantly made you cooler and fluffier and just like everybody else.
...which is why we've added a links section to the blog. we know lots of folks who have great blogs and we also spend a lot of time putzing around on the web, looking for recipes that will solve our dining dilemmas. the interweb is kind of an integral part of our cooking experience and it only makes sense that we bring that to the blog as well.
blog of the month: Damn Good Food to Go. this is my sister's blog about owning a restaurant. you're more likely to find anecdotes about people's inability to read menus than recipes, but I highly recommend it. (I also highly recommend you check out the restaurant if you're ever in key west.) unfortunately, she can't post too often because she works so frickin' much, but when she does it's worth it.
p.s. when reviewing the perm imagery that serves as the intro for this post, please picture something along the lines of what you might find on the cover of a sweet valley high book. that was the driving force behind this very special post.

justify my love: the garlic edition
over brunch this weekend, the food blog came up. here's how the food blog has changed my life: I have discovered that I have a serious garlic issue. I won't call it a problem, but let's just say that my instinct with garlic is to lean hard on the extreme; I always at the very least double the number of cloves required for a recipe and, when just free-wheelin' in the kitchen, tend to throw in a good half head or so for a simple stir fry. my hands tend to reek of garlic at all times, let alone the impression that my breath can leave.
thank goodness, then, that the NYTimes has my back: Unlocking the Benefits of Garlic. not only does this explain that garlic is good for you, but it emphasizes that a lot of garlic is good for you. y'all should be thanking me.
